Fort Aguada built by the Portuguese in 1612 is one of the best preserved bastions in Goa. Located at the mouth of river Mandovi, it strategically controlled the entry of vessels and gave protection to their territory. It was conceived to counter the Dutch fleet and survived a serious threat by the Marathas in 1741. It houses an ancient light house and is presently a major tourist attraction in Goa.
