The Boeing Company announced plans to further deepen its relations with suppliers and partners in India. The company has outlined a comprehensive strategy to develop India’s industrial capabilities, with a keen focus on India’s indigenous aerospace community.

“Boeing is uniquely positioned to engage common supplier partners for civil aviation and defense products, which will accelerate quality and capability,” said Boeing India President Dinesh Keskar at a media briefing on the eve of Aero India 2011. “This will strengthen India’s focus in building aerospace products.”

Boeing’s deeper industry engagement with India has increased in parallel with the strategic U.S.-India relationship. The company’s offset commitment of $2.3 billion is a catalyst to spur technology development and job creation, and to firmly establish India’s industrial position in the international aerospace supply chain.

“As Boeing’s defense business expands internationally, especially in Asia, we are investing considerable effort and resources to be successful in our industrial engagement strategies,” said Mark Kronenberg, vice president, International Business Development, Boeing Defense, Space & Security. “India is a very integral part of our strategy and we will continue to work with our Indian customers and the industry to meet our commitments.”

India represents a $31 billion addressable market for Boeing Defense, Space & Security over the next 10 years. In addition to offering the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet in the current MMRCA competition, other opportunities in the country include C-17 Globemaster III, Apache, Chinook, and P-8I. Boeing also sees opportunities in the areas of homeland security, unmanned systems, cybersecurity, space, and services and support. On the commercial side, Boeing’s forecast for airplanes amounts to $130 billion in the next 20 years.

Boeing is working with top India manufacturers such as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), the Tata companies, and Larson & Toubro to build several key components, including the 777 flaperon, F/A-18E/F gun bay door and 787 floor beam. Boeing has also increased its investment in training its partners in Lean manufacturing and program management skills. Through its research and technology center in Bangalore, Boeing is developing fundamental research in materials, avionics and aero structures in partnership with the Indian Institute of Science, National Aerospace Laboratories and premium academic institutes. Boeing plans to expand the number of capable suppliers within the public and private sectors in India and insert capability where there are gaps, thereby broadening the base of indigenous capability and increasing the global competitiveness of India’s supply base.
