SlideShow | ThumbnailsOnce recruited he quickly takes to the orderly ways of the army. He does not grudge the unit routine and accepts it as a practical necessity. Through the rough and tumble of regimental life he develops bonds of camaraderie that sustain him in the trials of combat. Yet, when not on parade or duty he goes back, in the privacy of his thoughts, to his family in the village. He looks up to the officers in the battalion, trusts them and unquestioningly obeys them.
