81mm Mortars firing on enemy positions at Khulna
Right in the opening stages of the war 1/11 Gorkha Rifles had infiltrated behind the enemy defences to establish a road block. This compelled 25 Frontier Force, which was withdrawing from Mian Bazar, to surrender. At about the same time Major Anup Singh Gahlaut of the Dogra Regiment executed a similar manoeuvre to establish a road block with his company in the Laksham sector. This officer then volunteered to assist another company in distress. He died while accomplishing this hazardous mission and was awarded MVC. In Jessore sector, 1 Jammu &.. Kashmir Rifles under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Surinder Kapur was invincible and beat back five attacks in over three days. For his inspiring command throughout the war, the Commanding Officer was honoured with MVC.
