Early March 2012, the Indian Army successfully test-fired the BrahMos stealth supersonic cruise missile at Pokhran in the Western sector, providing itself with much-needed swift strike capability along the border with Pakistan. BrahMos, with a range of 290 km, can fly as low as ten metres to attack surface targets above the ground and can reach a speed of Mach 2.8 or nearly three times the speed of sound. “In conformity and pursuit of operational and strategic surface to surface missile capability development, the second BrahMos unit of the Army has been operationalised somewhere in Western sector,” said an Indian Army spokesman. “The BrahMos missile successfully destroyed the preselected target in the field firing ranges in Rajasthan,” he added.

Army Vice-Chief Lt. Gen. Shri Krishna Singh, Vice Chief of Army Staff was present during the test-firing of BrahMos, which is the world’s fastest cruise missile in operation. With the capability of being launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land, the BrahMos, has already been inducted into the Indian Navy and the Indian Army. BrahMos is a joint production of India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Federal State Unitary Enterprise NPO Mashinostroyenia of Russia.
