India will purchase Rs.40,000 Crore Russian missiles to boost aerial defence

India will buy Russia’s famed S-400 Triumf air defence missile system for an estimated Rs 40,000 crore after the defence ministry paved the way for the mega purchase days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to leave for Moscow for a summit with President Vladimir Putin.

The S-400 Triumf can tackle multiple aerial threats at long ranges and is considered to be the most advanced system available with Russia. The Indian order will boost the tottering air defence system which relies on old missiles.

Before India, China has already ordered S-400 air defence system from Russia.

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), which met on Thursday, approved the purchase of five units of S-400 air defence system. After the go ahead, New Delhi will start price negotiations. It is estimated that the whole contract should cost the country around Rs 40,000 crore.

There is sense of urgency in India to procure the system and direct deal with the Russian government will help in accelerated induction. Russia had recently moved the cutting-edge missile system in Syria catching the world attention. The deployment was meant to prevent violation of airspace by Turkey.

The system has three misbe destroyed by S-400. Apart from S-400, the DAC also gave approval for the acquisition of six new regiments of the Pinaka rocket system. This will also strengthen the air defence capabilities of the country.

The acquisition is worth Rs 14,600 crore. The existing Pechors Air Defence system will now be digitised as the DAC approved the proposal worth Rs 1,200 crore.

The Army will get 571 light bulletproof vehicles for use in the counter insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast and 120 trawls for T-72 and T-90 tanks used by the army has also been approved.

The Navy also got a boost as the DAC made some changes in the proposal for construction of the five-fleet support ships worth Rs 9,000 crore.

According to information available in open domain, the air defence system is capable to take on upto 36 targets at range of over 150 kilometres.

It is known as anti-aircraft system but all kinds of aerial targets including missiles can be destroyed by S-400.
