C-17 Globemaster III

The ever-changing nature of war and the fast emerging geopolitical uncertainties in India’s neighbourhood constitute real security concerns for the country. India’s need to ferry troops and materials in times of military or humanitarian contingencies requires a high degree of military readiness of the fleet of the Indian armed forces.

Boeing is providing not just the most capable, most advanced platform but also a reliable services and support network to maintain the highest level of readiness to carry any mission at any time.

Boeing is committed to helping the Indian armed forces achieve their modernization objectives and mission- readiness objectives. India’s C-17 and P-8I fleet have demonstrated an excellent record in supporting the missions of the IAF and Navy.

In December 2014, Boeing completed all 10 C-17 deliveries to India, meeting its commitments as per a 2011 agreement signed between India’s Ministry of Defense and U.S government to acquire ten C-17 airlifters. The sale established India as the largest international customer of C-17.

Keeping to its schedule, Boeing also delivered the sixth P-8I maritime surveillance and anti submarine aircraft to the Indian Navy last year. With these deliveries, only two P-8Is remain to be delivered as per the 2009 contract for eight P-8I aircraft.

The Indian armed forces have always been at the forefront of search and rescue missions and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations. The Indian Air Force’s C-17 and Indian Navy’s P-8I were at the forefront of rescue and humanitarian aid efforts in the natural disasters that affected Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir and Odisha. The C-17 was deployed to rescue thousands of people and deliver relief supplies during the massive flood that struck the Kashmir valley recently. During the Bihar flood operations, C-17s were deployed to deliver thousands of gallons of water, food and medical supplies in the flood-affected areas.

The enhanced reach and versatility of the airlifter has helped support operations in an extremely challenging terrain that spans from Himalayas in the north to the Indian Ocean region in the South. With its ability to operate from short landing strips, the aircraft has proven to be a crucial enabler to reach the length and breadth of the country.

C-17s were also successfully deployed to stave off the recent water crisis in Maldives. After a major fire caused the biggest water treatment plant in Male to shutdown, leaving 130,000 Maldivians without water, the IAF dispatched four C-17 transport aircraft, carrying over 200 tons of packaged water. The timely water aid not just provided massive relief to the island nation but also helped India meet its commitment as a responsible neighbor.

…the focus on ensuring operational readiness through a product’s lifecycle by means of affordable support and services, is Boeing’s top priority.

From being deployed to trace the missing Malaysian jet MH370, to being put on standby for the AirAsia flight QZ8501 the P-8I has so far demonstrated an admirable record in supporting the missions of the Indian Navy. The P-8I was also deployed to perform aerial reconnaissance and gather data for planning relief efforts during Cyclone Hudhud.

As the modernization effort of India’s armed forces progresses with the acquisition of new platforms and upgrade of existing ones, the focus on ensuring operational readiness through a product’s lifecycle by means of affordable support and services is Boeing’s top priority. Boeing ramped up its support and training capabilities to help customers achieve maximum operational and mission- readiness of their products. Boeing is supporting the IAF’s C-17 Globemaster III fleet through the Globemaster III Integrated Sustainment Program (GISP) Performance-Based Logistics contract. The GISP “virtual fleet” arrangement ensures mission readiness by providing all C-17 customers access to an extensive support network for worldwide parts availability and economies of scale.

For the P-8I program, Boeing’s Global Services & Support (GS&S) business is providing best-value mission readiness as it trained Indian Navy pilots, mission system operators and maintenance technicians in Seattle. The group also provides high fidelity training to other global customers to maximize readiness training performed in ground-based training systems. Training solutions are designed to maintain P-8I training device concurrency with aircraft by using P-8I flight and mission software which has helped reduced P-8I’s total ownership costs.

The significance of military’s mission-readiness cannot be overstated as the real challenge lies in being able to rise to the occasion whenever the situation demands.

In order to act swiftly and decisively, whether during conflict or peacetime, the ability to mobilize rapidly and efficiently isn’t negotiable. Turnaround time, availability and the readiness of platforms and units for specific missions assumes enormous importance for both offensive or defensive action as well as humanitarian operations. Whether it is a peacekeeping, wartime or humanitarian mission, Boeing is providing not just the most capable, most advanced platform but also a reliable services and support network to maintain the highest level of readiness to carry any mission at any time.
