The average Indian infantry jawan comes from a rural background – a peasant from some far off village with small holdings. He is used to hardships and an austere lifestyle. His upbringing is influenced by the worldly wisdom of the elders in the family, the simple value systems of rural India, and by religious observances. Today’s infantry soldier is better educated and informed than his predecessors a generation ago.
