Located 11 miles south of Mumbai, Khanderi is a small island fort built by Shivaji in 1679. There were numerous failed attempts to dislodge the Marathas by the English and Siddis. It was finally ceded to the English in 1818 as part of Peshwa territory. In 1687 the English built a lighthouse on the island which still stands.
