SlideShow | ThumbnailsAfter the Soviet Union dissolved and Russia started downsizing its Navy due to financial constraints, the Russian side offered the Gorshkov to India, along with MIG 29K aircraft developed specifically for carrier borne operations. The acquisition of Gorshkov formed part of the joint Indo-Russian Protocol on Military Technical Cooperation signed in December 1994. The financial aspects were unusual – Gorshkov ‘as is, where is’ would be free; India need only pay for the cost of refit and the aircraft.
