Hearing the news of surrender on radio
SlideShow | ThumbnailsOn 16 December 1971, Lt Gen JS Aurora, GOC¬in-C, Eastern Command accepted history's greatest surrender at the Dhaka Race Course. The Indian Army had liberated Bangladesh in twelve days. Over 90,000 Pakistani troops were taken prisoners of war. The speed of operations had surprised the defenders who were never allowed to regain their balance. Indeed, Dhaka fell even before the rings of prepared defences around it could be manned. Military observers the world over were amazed by the swiftness of the events.
