China conducted one of its biggest Air Force exercises involving nearly 100 combat aircraft of ten different types while it is embroiled in a dispute over drilling for oil in the South China Sea near the Vietnam coast and tensions with Japan over the territorial dispute in the East China Sea continue.

“Vietnam should immediately stop unilateral oil exploration in that part of the sea and stop interrupting Chinese fishing boats so as to create conducive atmosphere for relevant negotiations,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a media briefing. Tensions have been on the rise since China stepped up sea patrols around East China Sea islands claimed by it but controlled by Japan.

China has also been holding military exercises involving land, air and naval forces in various locations practicing capturing islands and holding on to them. China is taking these steps against the backdrop of growing tensions with Japan.
