The Bowman and Tactical Communications and Information Systems (BATCIS) Experimentation, Research and Operational Support Team, including team members from General Dynamics UK, has received a commendation from Chief of Defence Materiel (CDM) Bernard Gray for its work on developing and delivering the most recent version of Bowman to the British Armed Forces.

The commendation was awarded for achievement beyond normal performance and expectations.

Major General Adrian Bradshaw, General Officer Commanding 1st (United Kingdom) Armoured Division, said, “The performance of this team has been outstanding. Their impact as a team and individually has been the significant factor in contributing to a hugely successful project, which will deliver operational benefit.”

The joint Ministry of Defence and General Dynamics UK team has worked since 2008 in direct support of Headquarters 1st (United Kingdom) Armoured Division, the lead unit for tactical data experimentation.

The joint team developed innovative ways of working together to deliver capability to operations. The creation of a first-rate experimental environment, in which developing and novel technologies could be tested, trialled and exploited was fundamental to the setting of conditions for the preoperational training of Forward Air Controllers from across the Coalition. These conditions were carried forward into 3 Commando and 7 Armoured Brigade’s training prior to deployment with BCIP 5.4 – the latest version of Bowman – on current operations in Afghanistan.
