Gopalgad is a coastal fort situated north of Goa opposite Dabhol harbor. The construction of the fort dates back to the 16th century, but it was strengthened by Siddis and Marathas. It played an important role in the history of the Maratha Navy. Khairat and Khan Habshi captured it in 1699 and built the upper citadel. In 1744 Tulaji Angre took over and strengthened the lower portion.
